In the Mid 1800s, Durham exploded in growth due to the production of tobacco which created jobs for thousands of families. The founding of NC Mutual Life Insurance Co, and the creation of the M&F Bank, helped create the famous "Black Wall Street". Durham is also home to Duke University, one of the nation's leading private universities.
